Balenciaga City Bag Guide: Every Motorcycle Size from First to Work

April 7, 2026

The Balenciaga Motorcycle bag is one of the most iconic silhouettes of the 2000s. Distressed leather, oversized hardware, those unmistakable tassels. Nicolas Ghesquiere designed the original for the Spring 2001 runway and it became the bag that defined a decade. Kate Moss, Mary-Kate Olsen, Nicole Richie. If you watched paparazzi photos in 2005, you saw this bag.

Here's the thing that trips people up: the Motorcycle family has six different sizes, and from a photo alone, they look almost identical. The Town and the City are only two inches apart. The First could pass for a clutch. The Work could hold your entire life. If you're buying secondhand, knowing which one you're looking at is the difference between a perfect everyday bag and a "why doesn't anything fit in here."

First

Dimensions: 13" x 7.5" x 2.5" (33 x 19 x 6 cm)

The First is the original. This is the exact bag that walked the Spring 2001 runway. It's the smallest in the family, genuinely flat, almost clutch-like. Short rolled handles, no shoulder strap. You can fit a phone, a card case, lipstick, and keys, and that's about it.

It's a going-out bag that happens to be covered in studs. The girls who love the First love it because it's the purest expression of the Motorcycle design. No compromises for practicality. It's all attitude.

Resale: $400 to $900 depending on color and condition. Rare colors from the mid-2000s can push higher.

Town

Dimensions: 13" x 8.5" x 6" (33 x 21.5 x 15 cm)

The Town is the one people confuse with the City constantly. Same width as the First (13"), but it has real depth. It's a compact, structured little thing. Squarer proportions than the City. The handles are slightly shorter in relation to the body, which is the easiest tell from photos.

Think of it as the petite City. Everything you love about the Motorcycle design but scaled down for people who don't want to carry a big bag. It fits a small wallet, phone, sunglasses case, and a few extras. Enough for a normal day if you're not hauling your whole life around.

Resale: $500 to $1,100. The Town flies under the radar on the resale market, which means prices are often lower than the City for a bag that's just as beautiful.

Town vs. City: the quick tell. If you're looking at a photo and can't decide, look at the proportions. The Town is noticeably squarer. The City is wider and more rectangular. The hardware looks slightly larger on the Town because the bag itself is smaller. When in doubt, ask the seller for measurements.

City (Classic City)

Dimensions: 15" x 10" x 6" (38 x 25.5 x 15 cm)

This is the one. When people say "Balenciaga Motorcycle bag" without specifying a size, they mean the City. It's the most produced, the most recognizable, and the most sought-after on the secondary market. Every fashion girl from 2003 to 2012 either had one or wanted one.

The City is a true everyday bag. Fits a full wallet, phone, sunglasses, a small water bottle, some makeup, and still has room. The distressed arena leather develops an incredible patina over time. Older Cities from the Ghesquiere era (pre-2013) have softer, thinner leather that collectors prefer over the newer Demna-era bags.

Resale: $600 to $1,400. The widest range because condition and color matter a lot here. Black and dark neutrals in excellent condition hold the top end. 2004 to 2008 vintage with original brass hardware commands the highest prices from collectors.

Velo

Dimensions: 15" x 10" x 5.5" (38 x 25.5 x 14 cm)

Nearly the same dimensions as the City, but the Velo was designed specifically for crossbody wear. It comes with a long, wide shoulder strap and the body is slightly slouchier. If you loved the City but wanted to go hands-free, this was the answer.

The Velo never quite reached the City's cult status, which actually makes it a smart buy on the resale market. You get essentially the same bag with better versatility and a lower price tag. The crossbody strap makes it more practical for actual daily use.

Resale: $500 to $1,100. Consistently undervalued compared to the City. If you want the Motorcycle look and don't care about the specific model name, this is a great deal.

Part-Time

Dimensions: 18" x 11" x 7" (46 x 28 x 18 cm)

The Part-Time is the City's bigger sister. Three inches wider, a bit taller, a bit deeper. It often comes with a detachable shoulder strap, which gives it more carry options than the City. Named because it was designed for the woman who needs a bigger bag but doesn't want to commit to a full tote.

It's genuinely roomy. Laptop? Maybe a 13-inch. Gym clothes? Easily. Weekend trip? Absolutely. The Part-Time works for people who love the Motorcycle aesthetic but need more function. The proportions still read Motorcycle, not tote, so it stays stylish.

Resale: $500 to $1,200. Similar range to the Town and Velo. Less demand than the City but solid prices for popular colors.

Work

Dimensions: 18" x 13" x 8" (46 x 33 x 20 cm)

The biggest Motorcycle bag. The Work is a proper tote. Same width as the Part-Time but significantly taller and deeper. The key difference: the Work has an open top (no zipper), which makes it function more like a structured tote than a zipped bag. You reach in and grab things instead of unzipping.

This was the bag for women who wanted to take the Motorcycle to the office. It fits a 15-inch laptop, a notebook, a lunch, a makeup bag, and probably a small dog. It's a lot of bag. The open top means it's less secure but much more accessible.

Resale: $500 to $1,200. Less liquid than the City because the big tote market is more competitive. Great value if you actually want a big bag.

Hardware and leather: what to look for

All Motorcycle bags share the same DNA: arena leather (a type of lambskin with a distressed, slightly matte finish), giant studs, and tassel-pulled zippers. But there are variations that affect value.

Giant hardware (GH) vs. regular hardware (RH): Regular hardware has smaller, brass-toned studs and buckles. Giant hardware has oversized, polished studs. Regular hardware is more understated. Giant hardware is louder and more recognizable. RH is generally preferred by collectors, but GH has its fans. Neither consistently commands a premium over the other.

Leather era matters: Bags from 2004 to 2010 have thinner, softer, more distressed leather that develops a beautiful patina. Post-2012 bags tend to be thicker, stiffer, and less characterful. The older leather is what made these bags famous, and collectors pay more for it.

Which one should you buy?

If this is your first Motorcycle bag and you want the iconic look: get the City. There's a reason it's the most popular. It's the right size for everyday, it's the most recognizable, and it has the deepest resale market if you ever want to sell.

If you want something smaller and more manageable: the Town. All the charm, less the bulk.

If you want the best value for your money: the Velo. Same size as the City, crossbody strap included, lower prices.

If you need a big bag: the Part-Time. It scales up the design without losing the silhouette.
