How to Clean a Canvas Tote Bag

August 20, 2026

Plain canvas totes are workhorses, which means they get dirty. Coffee, ink, general life. The good news is untreated canvas is tough and can take more cleaning than leather, as long as it does not have leather trim or structure you need to protect.

Before anything, check for leather handles, a printed design, or a stiff base, because those change what you can safely do.

Spot-clean first

For fresh spots, dab (do not rub) with a cloth and a little mild soap or a fabric stain remover, working from the outside of the stain in so it does not spread. Let it dry and repeat rather than soaking it all at once.

Deep-clean by hand

For an all-over refresh, hand wash in cool water with a gentle detergent and a soft brush, then rinse. Skip the washing machine if the tote has leather trim, a structured base, or a print, since agitation warps and fades those. Reshape it while damp and air dry.

Dry it in shape

Never wring a canvas bag, which sets creases. Reshape it, stuff it lightly with a towel to hold its form, and let it air dry away from direct heat and sun so it does not shrink or fade.

This is general guidance for everyday materials. For high-value, vintage, suede, exotic, or heavily damaged bags, spot-test any product in a hidden area first and consider a professional restorer before treating the whole bag. Purr is not responsible for damage from at-home care.
