How to Clean a Coated Canvas Bag (LV, Goyard, Gucci)

Coated canvas, the material on Louis Vuitton monogram, Goyard, and Gucci GG bags, is basically canvas sealed with a thin plastic-like coating. That makes it water-resistant and genuinely easy to clean, which is a big part of why these bags hold up. The catch is that the coating and the printed pattern can rub off if you scrub too hard.

The other thing to know: the handles and trim are usually natural leather, and they need completely different care than the canvas. Treat them as two separate jobs.

Wipe the canvas gently

Dampen a microfiber cloth with water and a tiny bit of mild soap, and wipe the coated canvas in light strokes. For everyday grime, a fragrance-free and alcohol-free baby wipe works surprisingly well on coated canvas. Do not scrub at the pattern, and let it air dry.

Skip the harsh stuff

Magic erasers, alcohol, and solvents can strip the coating and dull the print, so use them sparingly if at all, and never on the leather trim. Always test a hidden spot first, like the underside or an inside corner.

Handle the leather trim separately

The vachetta or leather handles patina and stain differently from the canvas, so clean and condition them on their own with leather-specific products. Let everything dry fully before you use or store the bag.
