How to Get Mold Off a Leather Bag Without Wrecking It

You pulled a bag out of storage and it has that fuzzy white or green bloom on it. Do not panic, and do not scrub it with whatever is under your sink. Mold on leather is common, especially in a humid closet, and most of the time it comes off without lasting damage if you go gently.

The goal is to lift the mold, kill the spores so it does not return, and put moisture back into the leather. Here is the order that actually works.

Take it outside first

Mold releases spores when you disturb it, and you do not want those settling into the rest of your closet. Wipe the bag down outdoors or somewhere well ventilated, and wear a mask if there is a lot of it. Let it sit in indirect light for an hour first, which weakens the surface mold before you touch it.

Wipe, do not scrub

Mix a little mild soap or a leather-safe cleaner with water, dampen a soft microfiber cloth so it is barely wet, and wipe the mold away in gentle strokes. Never soak leather. For stubborn spots a cloth lightly dampened with diluted white vinegar helps kill spores, but spot-test a hidden corner first, and skip vinegar entirely on suede and exotic skins.

Condition, then fix the cause

Once it is clean and fully dry, work in a leather conditioner so the leather does not dry out and crack. Then solve the real problem, which is almost always damp storage. Keep the bag somewhere with airflow, tuck a couple of moisture-absorbing packs in with it, and never store leather sealed in plastic.
