How to Get the Smell Out of a Vintage Bag
August 10, 2026
Vintage bags come with history, and sometimes that history smells like a basement. Musty, smoky, or just old. The good news is that odor lives in the lining and the trapped air far more than in the leather itself, so you can usually get it out without anything harsh.
It takes patience more than product. Here is what works, from gentlest to strongest.
Air it out first
Nine times out of ten, time and airflow do most of the work. Empty the bag, open every pocket and zip, and let it breathe somewhere dry and shaded for a few days. Direct sun fades and dries leather, so keep it in indirect light.
Absorb the odor, do not mask it
Put an open box of baking soda or a bowl of activated charcoal inside the bag, tuck the whole thing loosely into a cotton pillowcase (never plastic), and leave it for a few days to a week. Charcoal and baking soda pull odor out of the air trapped in the lining. Cedar blocks work too and leave a nicer note behind.

For a stubborn lining
If the smell is baked into the fabric lining, lightly mist the lining only (never the leather or hardware) with a fabric refresher and let it dry fully with the bag open. If it still lingers after all this, a professional cleaner can treat the lining without risking the bag.
This is general guidance for everyday leather. For high-value, vintage, suede, or exotic bags, spot-test any product in a hidden area first, and consider a professional leather restorer before treating the whole bag. Purr is not responsible for damage from at-home care.
