Louis Vuitton Speedy Guide: Every Size from Nano to 40

The Speedy is the entry point to Louis Vuitton. It has been in production since 1930 (originally as the "Express") and it remains the brand's most recognizable bag that isn't a trunk. Audrey Hepburn asked Louis Vuitton to make a smaller version of the Keepall for everyday use. They made the Speedy 25. The rest is history.

What makes the Speedy interesting on the resale market is that it comes in six sizes, three main canvas prints, and two carry styles (top-handle only vs. Bandouliere with a strap). Some combinations hold their value beautifully. Others depreciate the second you walk out of the store. Knowing the difference saves you money.

The Nano is technically a mini bag. It's tiny. Fits a card holder, AirPods, a key, and maybe a lip product. That's it. It comes with a crossbody strap and a top handle that's more decorative than functional. The whole thing is smaller than most people's hands.

But the resale numbers tell an interesting story. The Nano Speedy in Monogram holds value extremely well. It frequently sells at or above retail on the secondary market. Mini bags from Louis Vuitton have had a moment for the past few years and the Nano Speedy is the one that benefits most.

Resale: $1,000 to $1,500. One of the best LV investments at this price point. Limited availability drives prices up.

Speedy 20

The Speedy 20 is the newest addition to the family and it's quickly become one of the most popular. It's the Goldilocks mini bag. Big enough to fit a phone, a compact wallet, sunglasses, and a few essentials. Small enough to feel like a crossbody, not a suitcase. It only comes in the Bandouliere version (with strap), which makes sense at this size.

This is the size that younger buyers gravitate toward. It works for brunch, errands, nights out. It's the "I just need my phone and my card" bag but with the Speedy shape that your mom and her mom both recognize.

Resale: $1,200 to $1,800. Holds value extremely well. The Empreinte leather version in black or beige commands the highest prices.

Speedy 25

Dimensions: 9.8" x 7.5" x 5.9" (25 x 19 x 15 cm)

This is the Audrey Hepburn bag. The original "make me something smaller" request. The 25 is the classic everyday Speedy. It fits a wallet, phone, sunglasses, makeup pouch, and a small water bottle. It's the most balanced size in the lineup.

The 25 comes in both the original top-handle-only version and the Bandouliere (with a removable crossbody strap). If you're buying secondhand, the Bandouliere version commands a premium because the strap adds so much versatility. A top-handle-only Speedy 25 is great if you like carrying bags by hand, but most modern buyers want the strap option.

Resale: $700 to $1,300. The Bandouliere version in Monogram or Damier Ebene sits at the top of that range. Original top-handle versions from the 2000s can dip below $500 depending on condition of the vachetta leather.

Speedy 30

The 30 was the most popular Speedy for decades. Before the mini bag trend, this was the default. It's noticeably larger than the 25, fits everything the 25 does plus a book, a light jacket, or a tablet. It's the "throw everything in" bag.

The shift toward smaller bags has softened demand for the 30 on the resale market. That makes it a fantastic value buy right now. You're getting one of the most recognizable bags in fashion history for well under $1,000 in good condition. If oversized bags cycle back (and they always do), prices will follow.

Resale: $600 to $1,200. The sweet spot for value buyers. Pre-owned Speedy 30s in Monogram canvas are one of the best deals in luxury resale right now.

Speedy 35

The 35 starts to cross into weekender territory. It's a big bag. Fits a 13-inch laptop, a change of clothes, toiletries. It was the original "work Speedy" before the Bandouliere strap was introduced. Some people use it as a carry-on personal item.

Demand is lower for the 35 in the current small-bag market. This is the size that sits longest on consignment sites. But that's exactly why it's cheap. If you need a big bag and love the Speedy shape, you can find a 35 in excellent condition for under $700.

Resale: $500 to $1,000. Lower demand but strong value. The Damier Azur print in the 35 holds slightly better because it's more of a summer/travel bag.

Speedy 40

Dimensions: 15.7" x 9.8" x 7.5" (40 x 25 x 19 cm)

The 40 is basically a small Keepall. It's been discontinued and isn't produced anymore, but you'll find them on the resale market from the 2000s and early 2010s. This is not an everyday bag. It's a weekend bag, an overnight bag, or a gym bag for someone who wants to bring Louis Vuitton energy to the locker room.

Resale: $400 to $800. The lowest resale values in the Speedy family. Discontinued status hasn't driven prices up because the Keepall fills this role better.

Canvas, leather, and print: what matters for value

Monogram canvas: The classic brown LV print. Most liquid on the resale market, easiest to sell, most recognizable. This is the default and the safest bet.

Damier Ebene: The brown checkerboard. More understated than Monogram. Holds value similarly but appeals to a slightly different buyer. Great for people who find Monogram too loud.

Damier Azur: The light blue/white checkerboard. Beautiful, but the light-colored vachetta leather on Monogram and the light canvas on Azur both show wear faster. Resale prices can dip if there's visible dirt or patina that's gone past golden into dark brown.

Empreinte leather: Full leather, embossed LV pattern. This is the premium option. It costs more at retail and holds value better on resale than canvas. The Speedy 20 and 25 in Empreinte are particularly strong performers.

Which Speedy should you buy?

If you want the best resale value: Nano Speedy or Speedy 20 Bandouliere. Both hold or appreciate in the current market. The mini bag trend is still strong and these are the sizes that benefit.

If you want a practical everyday bag: Speedy 25 Bandouliere. The classic choice. Big enough to be useful, small enough to not overwhelm you. The strap makes it modern.

If you want the best deal: Speedy 30 in Monogram. You can find these for $600 to $800 in great condition. It's one of the most iconic bags ever made and it costs less than a new pair of designer sneakers.
